Introducing Overt Dynamics

February 28, 2025

Overt Dynamics was created to bring robotics to everyone. There already are plenty of companies that claim a similar vision, but very few succeed. Does a robotic arm that costs $5,000 really bring robotics to everyone? Does a single actuator that costs well in excess of $300 really bring robotics to everyone? I would argue the answer to both of these questions is no. In addition, while cheap toy robotics are fun for kids, they don’t meet the demands of many hobbyist or educational use cases for robotics.

This is where Overt Dynamics comes in. Overt not only strives to bring down the monetary costs associated with many robotic components, but to produce an open-source infrastructure that allows users to get up and running with robots without the need for proprietary software, long back-and-forth with customer support, and massive amounts of struggling and confusion. Specs ought to be on the front page, control interfaces ought to be well-documented, and controlling robots ought not be limited to proprietary hardware or software.

Overt Dynamics will start with the development of an actuator called A1. A1 will be a prototype for a precise and reliable actuator with all the standard features of high-end robotic actuators, and the addition of a UART control interface to enable a wide range of open-source control applications. The findings from the development of A1 will serve as a basis for a greater line of actuators, as well as Overt’s first full-featured robotic arm.

Many exciting projects are in the pipeline, so stay tuned.
